Autism Assessment

A supportive, individualised pathway to clarity

Our Approach

At Insight Collective, our autism assessment process is designed to help families understand not only what a young person is experiencing, but how it feels from the inside. Many children and adolescents work incredibly hard to cope, masking, pushing through sensory discomfort, holding themselves together at school, and then melting down or shutting down at home. We take a neuroaffirming, strengths-based approach that centres the young person’s internal experience, identity, and wellbeing, alongside careful clinical assessment.

We pace the process for each individual. Some young people need time to warm up, breaks between tasks, predictable structure, or a slower pace. Others prefer clear, direct explanations and a collaborative approach. We make the assessment environment calm and respectful, and we adapt our approach so the young person feels safe, understood, and not “tested” in a cold or intimidating way.

Autism also presents differently across individuals, particularly for girls, high-masking adolescents, and young people with co-occurring anxiety, ADHD, or learning differences. For this reason, we don’t use a one-size-fits-all battery. Instead, we tailor the assessment to the referral question and the young person’s presentation. This typically includes an in-depth intake; developmental and educational history; questionnaires from parents/teachers (and self-report when appropriate); a structured clinical exploration of autism features; and, where helpful, additional measures to clarify regulation, sensory experiences, learning, or adaptive functioning.

The outcome is a clear, compassionate formulation and practical recommendations for home and school. Our aim is that families leave with greater clarity, validation, and a supportive path forward.
